When getting into reading it can be hard to understand certain terms. This is why this blog post will help you find out about the different acronym and terminologies. When entering the book world words such as: TBR, YA, OTP or Ship are being used a lot. Thus it is important to know the meanings. As well as different genres. This can help you to find your favourite niche.

Genres

The first step is to differentiate the genres into fiction and non-fiction. When that is done, the following overview comes into view:

Fiction
  1. Literary Fiction: Emphasizes the quality and style of writing over plot. Focuses on character development and explores deeper themes.

  2. Mystery/Thriller: Involves solving a crime, uncovering secrets, or dealing with suspenseful situations.

  • Cozy Mystery: A subgenre where the violence and suspense are downplayed, and the focus is on an amateur detective solving a puzzle in a small community.

3. Science Fiction (Sci-Fi): Explores futuristic or speculative concepts, often involving advanced technology or otherworldly settings.

4. Fantasy: Features magical elements, mythical creatures, and often takes place in fantastical worlds. Can also be divided into two:

  • High Fantasy: Set in a richly detailed fantasy world with its own history, cultures, and often involves epic quests.

  • Urban Fantasy: Blends fantastical elements with a contemporary urban setting.

Non-Fiction
  1. Biography/Autobiography: Tells the life story of a real person (biography) or is written by the person themselves (autobiography).

  2. History: Explores events and facts from the past, providing insight into different time periods.

  3. Self-Help: Aims to provide guidance and advice for personal development and improvement.

  4. Science: Covers various scientific topics, making them accessible to a general audience.

And of course the genre that is loved by many:

Romance:

  • Contemporary Romance: Set in the present day and focuses on romantic relationships.

  • Historical Romance: Takes place in a historical setting, often with a focus on the romantic aspects of that time period.

Acronyms

1. TBR: To Be Read

  • This acronym is often used in the bookish community. When someone says a book is on their TBR list, it means they plan to read it, but they haven't gotten around to it yet.

2. YA: Young Adult

  • This refers to a category of literature that is targeted primarily towards teenagers and young adults. YA books often feature protagonists in the same age range and deal with themes relevant to that demographic.

3. OTP: One True Pairing

  • In fandom culture, OTP refers to a person's favorite romantic pairing of characters. It's the couple that someone "ships" the most and believes is meant to be together.

4. Ship: Relationship

  • In a fandom context, "shipping" refers to the act of wanting two characters to be in a romantic relationship. The term "ship" is short for "relationship." Fans often "ship" their favorite characters, expressing a desire for them to be romantically involved.
